With so many good golf courses to choose from in north Leeds its hard to keep golfers coming back for more, but superb greens and a warm welcome count for a lot and it is a combination Horsforth Golf Club has got down to a fine tee.
The hospitable clubhouse greets even first-time visitors like old friends and is a welcoming haven for members and visiting parties or societies alike with extensive facilities including two Covid busting outdoor terraces.
The large new deck outside the 19th lounge overlooks the first tee where golfers embark on their round over the parkland and moorland layout designed by one of Yorkshire’s most famous sons, Dr Alister MacKenzie.
Full concentration is required from the outset with out of bounds left and a ditch on the right protecting the first fairway, but with that particular challenge negotiated devilish short holes and a range of challenging par 4’s await.
Two which are likely to live long in the memory and provide much discussion in the well-appointed clubhouse bars are the short par-four 10th and long closing hole.
The former, at little over 300 yards, offers the adventurous the opportunity to drive the green by taking on a blind shot with out-of-bounds inside the angle of the left-hand dogleg. Those laying up will find even a wedge approach to the narrow ledge of a green a ticklish proposition.
The 18th, meanwhile, is close to 550 yards long and plays over the brow of a hill before the s-shaped fairway tumbles down to a green protected by a newly constructed large pond which makes a previously demanding finishing hole a little more daunting.
Unlike many private clubs in the city visitors are welcomed on weekends, subject to availability with packages starting at £30 for a round and a pre-game coffee and bacon sandwich right up to the Eagle package which includes coffee and bacon roll, 27 or 36 holes, lunchtime soup and sandwiches and a golfer’s meal after the closing round. All are available until September 30.
New members are the lifeblood of any golf club and ladies and juniors can take advantage of great incentives including a beginners’ trial offer for ladies which costs just £60 for three months including lessons.
Horsforth has built up an enviable reputation for hosting a variety of functions and offers a wealth of experience in arranging anything from weddings to funerals utilising a range of rooms with layouts to suit all occasions.
PGA Professionals Dean Stokes and Simon Booth have worked together at Horsforth since 2000 and deliver to members and visitors alike a range of services including tuition and club fitting using the advanced Flightscope system.
